Panos D. Prevedouros, PhD is a Professor of Transportation since 1990, and was Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 2015 to 2020. He developed and managed UH’s Traffic and Transportation Laboratory (TTL). He was the Chair of the Freeway Operations and Connected Autonomous Vehicle Simulation Subcommittee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a unit of the National Academies, from 2006 to 2020. Prevedouros is a registered Professional Engineer in the European Union, a Court-qualified Traffic and Transportation Engineering expert in Hawaii and Illinois, and an Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP).

Prevedouros has expertise in urban road network management, traffic safety including incident management, traffic flow simulation, traffic signal optimization, intelligent transportation systems, demand forecasting and alternatives analysis, sustainable infrastructure including transportation, energy, policies and regulation.

As of mid-2020, Dr. Prevedouros has published 51 Technical Reports, 52 Academic Journal Papers, 53 Conference Refereed Papers, 42 Proceedings Papers, 6 sections or chapters in books, and co-authored the 2nd and 3rd editions of internationally adopted textbook “Transportation Engineering and Planning” (Prentice Hall, 1993 and 2001.) He has pioneered effective traffic solutions for Honolulu such as traffic underpasses and reversible flow lanes. He blogs on Hawaii’s infrastructure challenges at fixoahu.blogspot.com.

Dr. Prevedouros is an advisor to Attiki Odos, an expressway in Athens, Greece completed in 2004. He designed several congestion mitigation solutions that AO built. All major improvements to H-1 freeway done between 2000 and 2015 were investigated, simulated and justified by him. He also served as a temporary agent of the World Bank for traffic safety in Nepal, in 2012 and 2016.

Prevedouros has won several awards including Best Paper award on transportation noise from TRB in 1995, Outstanding Faculty award from the American Society of Civil Engineers-Hawaii in 1996, Van Wagoner award for Urban Underpasses from the Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2005, Freeway Operations Service award from TRB in 2009, and Best Paper on Transportation Sustainability award from the World Road Association in 2011.
